Red Velvet Cake

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Cup Shortening
  • 1 1/2 Cups Sugar
  • 2 Whole Eggs
  • 2 Tablespoons Cocoa
  • 2 Ounces Red Food Coloring
  • 2 1/2 Cups Cake Flour
  • 1 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1 Cup Buttermilk
  • 1 Teaspoon Vinegar
  • 1 Teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1 Teaspoon Baking Soda

  • 1 Cup Butter
  • 1 Cup Milk
  • 1 Tablespoon Vanilla
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons Flour

Directions

  1. Cream shortening, eggs, and sugar. Make paste of cocoa and part of food coloring.
  2. Add this and the rest of the food coloring to creamed mixture.
  3. Sift flour and salt. Add flour mixture and buttermilk to creamed mixture, alternating the two.
  4. Add vinegar. Stir soda and vanilla together and add to batter. Mix well.
  5. Bake 2 8 in pans for 30 minutes at 350°.
  6. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
  7. Cook milk and flour until thick. Cool milk mixture.
  8. Add vanilla to sugar and butter, then add milk gradually, beating constantly.
  9. Split cake into layers. Frost between layers and on top but not the sides.
  10. Store cake in refrigerator.
